Weston man tackles 'funeral poverty' by launching possibly the UK's first ever 'at cost' funeral for the families of people who die under the age of 30. A WESTON man, fed-up at 'funeral poverty', has become the UK's only Funeral Director to offer 'at cost' funerals for anyone under the age of 30.
At a time of austerity and Foodbanks, Nigel Groves Funeral Directors is producing a range of initiatives aimed at ensuring local people don't struggle at their times of grief.
His latest measure is to provide an 'at cost' funeral for anyone up to 30 years of age at the time of death. It is believed to be the only such package in any funeral directors nationally.
He already provides free funerals for the families of anyone aged under 18, which when compared to other firms locally, extends the time scale by two years.
And his 24-7, all-year-round personally tailored funeral directors already offers Weston's lowest priced funerals at £999 - more than 100% cheaper than some other funeral directors.
Nigel said: "Funerals are far too expensive generally and we are determined to help local people in any way we can, at a time when Foodbank use is rife and finances are tighter than ever.
"Our first contribution to helping deal with Funeral poverty is therefore to provide this subsidised funeral service for any person up to 30 years of age at the time of death.
"The death of someone of a younger age normally brings with it a different set of issues with which families have to deal and come to terms with than if the deceased was elderly.
The intense grief of a young life ending prematurely, and the devastating sense of loss afterwards is something that no wife, husband, mother, father, son or daughter should have to go through. As caring funeral directors we are not only here to help these families deal with the practical issues, but also to stand by their side, giving support and guidance to help them through this most difficult time.
"Setting high standards while controlling rising funeral costs is something that we are passionate about, and this is the start of an initiative we will be actively promoting to try and help reduce these costs within the Weston-super-Mare community, and beyond across Somerset.
"There are a number of simple things families can do to help themselves if their finances are tight, the main one is to be aware that their loyalty comes at a price, so they should make sure that their historic choice of Funeral Director is a loyalty that deserves their continued support, don’t rush, pick the phone up, talk to that person who will be at your side, ask about what they will do for you, and their cost for providing that service. Make sure your final choice meets all your requirements. The highest standards of care and respect given to you and your loved ones by your chosen funeral director should never be compromised, no matter what you pay. All families who use Nigel Groves Funeral Directors, receive a personal service with the highest level of care and support, and even though our charges are the most competitive, these families will still be contributing to helping us combat funeral poverty within Weston-Super-Mare, and the wider Somerset community."
Nigel's firm prides itself on the high standards of care and service it provides, but is also the only local firm with their £999 simple funeral fee being less than the compulsory external or 'disbursement’ fees which total over £1200 for the crematorium, doctors' and minister costs.
After over 10 years working in an upper management position for a big corporate funeral directors, where he witnessed the hardship that charging unnecessarily high fixed costs can cause many families, Nigel wants to give something back and help out financially vulnerable local people.
